About

Jackson Square is a 2.5-acre historic park and National Historic Landmark located in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans. Originally known as Place d'Armes, it was designed in 1721 and served as a military parade ground and the site of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Renamed in 1851 to honor General Andrew Jackson, the square features a central bronze equestrian statue of Jackson and four neoclassical statues representing the seasons. The park is bounded by Decatur, St. Peter, St. Ann, and Chartres Streets and is surrounded by iconic buildings including St. Louis Cathedral, the Cabildo, the Presbytère, and the Pontalba Apartments. Key features and visitor information include: - The square functions as an open-air artist colony where up to 200 permitted local artists display work on the iron fence. - It is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm, extending to 7 pm during Daylight Savings Time. - The location hosts major events such as the French Quarter Festival and holiday caroling. - Nearby attractions include Café du Monde, the Mississippi River, and the French Market. - Public transportation is available via the Riverfront Streetcar line.
